Infantile Spasms are a type of seizures - the seizures come in waves, numerous seizures spread out over several minutes. This video shows about 4 minutes of the seizures occurring, from start to finish. The seizures are occurring when she suddenly jerks her hands and arms outward (we called it a "startled" reflex). While sometimes the cause can be found for the seizures, in some cases the cause is unknown. For our daughter, the cause is still not known. [endtext]

An infantile spasm (IS) is a specific type of seizure seen in an epilepsy syndrome of infancy and childhood known as West Syndrome. West Syndrome is characterized by infantile spasms, developmental regression, and a specific pattern on electroencephalography (EEG) testing called hypsarrhythmia (chaotic brain waves). The onset of infantile spasms is usually in the first year of life, typically between 3-12 months. [endtext]
